FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, LAKE CITY, CO

PROFILE OF OUR CHURCH:

Shortly after Colorado became a state, First Baptist Church of Lake City, Colorado was established in 1883 with the mission of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ to miners and settlers in the area. It wasn’t by chance that this church sets on a hill shining as a light to this day in our little community for Jesus Christ. Nestled in the heart of the San Juan Mountains, this church exists to preach Christ and provide encouragement, fellowship, counsel and training for the maturing of believers as Colossians 1:28 expresses. As we focus on the depth of our ministry, we’ll let God focus on the breadth of our outreach. Coupled with the Great Commission from Matthew 28, this gospel centered church is a mission minded body focused on outreach near and far with 38% of our annual budget devoted to this commission. We are not “set apart” from our community but rather “a part” of our community with the desire to serve Christ a block away or an ocean away.
Because we live in a rural mountain, tourist setting, we see a tremendous increase in numbers during the summer/fall seasons. Meeting together from one service of 20 plus members in the winter, we swell to two services of 150 folks combined, many of whom have been very committed to this body for numerous years, viewing FBC as their second home church. This provides for a unique ministry; proclaiming Christ to a variety of people with different backgrounds. Our local year round body reflects a small, hardworking group seeking to grow into a more diverse body through ministry outreach.
We are committed to remaining debt free, even through seasons of building and expansion. Presently we are in the process of adding on to our Fellowship Hall, more than doubling our capacity for ministry and outreach. We desire to do the Lord’s work, the Lord’s way. We are a member of the Southern Baptist Convention and subscribe to the Baptist Faith and Message doctrinal statement.

PROFILE OF OUR COMMUNITY:

Lake City is a small, mountain community in southwest Colorado surrounded by five fourteen thousand foot peaks with rare and remote beauty. Boasting of a unique “peak experience” for families; young and old alike, this tourist county consists of 96% public lands and just over 800 year round residents which may include a few elk and deer. Wildlife is prolific and spectacular. Hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, jeeping, four wheeling, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and skiing to name a few become unmatched adventures in our backyard providing memories that last a lifetime. Summer seasons swell to several thousand but its’s pretty quiet after the colorful fall in September. The community supports a thriving school district of over 100 PreK through High School students, always leading the way in academic performance for this state. Our community is blessed with a new, professional Medical facility that supports an incredible staff complete with a Doctor, several nurses, usually a Physician’s Assistant and an excellent volunteer emergency service and fire department. We are also fortunate to have day care with a new facility in the town as well. It would be important to note that the closest McDonalds is 55 miles away with the nearest mall about three and a half hours away.
